Oddsmakers Favor Bears
September 28, 2061: San Fernando –GM Ron Collins reacted in typical fashion to news that BBA pundits had set the betting line for the Krill’s postseason tilt with the San Fernando Bears at 6:5 in favor of SFB.
“I'm surprised it's that close to be honest. San Fernando is a very good team and really only the most fervent supporters of our club would suggest we're playing at our best right now. I would expect a lot of people would take that bet.”
Not unsurprisingly, fans of Earth's team were unappreciative of that kind of comment coming from the top executive in the organization. “No wonder he can't win anything in October,” posted one fan who goes by the name BikiniBob9x12 In various virtual communities. “You'd expect the guy would be more supportive of his own team. Isn't it his job to make sure the club is playing their best at the end of the season? What are we paying him for?”
Other fans were not quite so charitable.
“He needs to be gone right now. If he doesn't resign, (owner) Westy needs to fire him. Ideally right before the opening pitch. Maybe that might light a fire under the guys.”
“Dump Collins, and hire Green. She's got the killer instinct the krill needs to get to the next level. Collins is just a starter GM. Always has been. Always will be.”
These comments come on the heels of a recent news report that puts the Bikini Krill’s fanbase as among the most disenchanted in the BBA, scoring a rancid “53” on the league’s primary fan metric (which scales to 100), ahead of only San Antonio’s 49 and Brooklyn’s 45. This despite their recent move from Seattle to the Atoll, and despite having made the post season now two of the past three seasons.
“I hear the fans,” Collins said in rebuttal. “All I can say to them is that we’re all working very hard to keep making progress each year. The BBA is a tough world to win in. but we’ve been able to make good things happen in a very short time. Oh, yeah, and also I have to agree with them that Moncia (Green) would make a very good GM some day.”
Regardless of the oddsmakers opinions—or that of Collins—the Krill will face the Bears in a series that starts tomorrow. Team owner Moreau P. Westmoreland has not weighed in with any comment, but one assumes that what happens on the field (and the turnstiles) may well have more to do with Collins’s future employment than any bookmaker’s odds.
