Two Arms Are Twice As Nice
September 16, 206: Marshall Islands -- Only hours after news that the Bikini Krill had signed veteran pitcher Takashi Nakamura to a multi-season contract extension, word came to the clubhouse that Brody Picot had also re-upped. The 36-year-old right-handed agreed to a one-season deal that is rumored to pay him $6.5M, a nice raise on the $5.5M deal he inked prior to last season.
Picot was 8-8 on the season before suffering a strained biceps that will keep him off the field until the second week of the post seasonassuming the team were to get that far, anyway. He posted a solid 4.01 ERA, but that came with a 3.32 FIP (74 FIP-) that was his best is some time. "If he'd gotten some decent run support early in the season, he might even have been in the whisper-network for Nebraska talk," one team insider said. As farcical as that might sound, the fact is that a 74 FIP- is enough to put a guy into the conversation, at least. So, shrug.
"I told Ron (GM Ron Collins) I wanted to come back here some time ago," Picot said. "But I know these things take time. I'm a big boy. I know how these things work. I'm just grateful to him and the Westmoreland institution for keeping me here and for making this really cool place to play baseball. I'm happy we got it done now, too, because I can focus on rehab, and being ready for when my teammates get us to the Doubleday Round. I'm really stoked to pitch again this year."
Like the Nakamura deal, this contract was likely triggered by the team's performance--meaning that if the Krill had not been a near-lock for the post-season, there was some chance that Picot would have been left to walk, possibly reaping the team a supplemental draft pick next year. With the club making post-season, however, their eligibility to qualify for such a pick was removed. It's all for the best, though. Picot has been a steady presence in the Krill rotation, and projects to repeat that kind of performance next year.
Manager Kate Fiscus was ecstatic. "I'm happy to know we have Takashi (Nakamura) and Brody back in the fold for next year. The pair of them along with Arturo Meza and Jon Brown will give me a lot of depth to pencil into the lineup."
