Ex-Rule 5 Lefty Becoming Fan Favorite
September 5, 2061: Marshall Islands – During a rare late-season travel day, reporters are saying that the Bikini Krill front office has contacted representatives of relatively unheralded reliever John Hurry to inquire about an extension that would keep him with the team longer than his last arbitration season.
“I would love to stay here longer,” the 32-year-old Hurry said yesterday. “My family loves it here—my wife especially. The atoll is a great place to live because it’s easy to find a bunch of things to do in the glitz of Foreverland, but you can also hop in a skiff and be on an uninhabited island in less than a half hour.”
Hurry came to the club as a Rule 5 selection out of the Calgary organization in the winter of 2056, just as the franchise was moving from Seattle to Bikini. His first two seasons were more than rocky, but the franchise continued to believe in his talent and he’s been a silent glue-guy for the past three seasons. He’s posted a 3.62 ERA so far this season, winning three games and losing one. “Classic Hurry,” a teammate said. “It’s like he’s not here except that he’s always there when you need him, doing exactly that." Hurry throws five pitches and mostly keeps the ball in the park.
Hurry’s salary this year is $2.65M, and some are suggesting his arbitration number would come in at something in the range of $3M. If rumors are true, the team would like to reduce that top number, but add years that would provide the Hurry family stability.
