Three-Run Blast Puts Gui Past Hickman
August 20, 2061: Forever Land Onetime Seattle Storm stalwart outfielder John Hickman is a coach down a little way in the Bikini organization these days, but he took a moment out of his night to send Run-ming Gui a text message. The occasion was that the Krill utility man blasted a three-run homer, which was a big deal in an important victory, sure, but had a bit of historical significance because the three RBI put him at 829 for his career, one more than Hickman's franchise total. It means Gui is now the #8 run producer in franchise history, measured by that quaint stat, RBI.
If he were to drive in 35 more, he would surpass Alejandro Dominquez, for 7th place.
From there it would be a long haul 189 RBI journey to catch Darius Rucker.
#34 Becomes #8"I'm just happy to be here and happy to make the team better when I can," Gui said, noting that there was a time last offseason where he thought he might be out of a job. His .274/.317/.503 slash has been flavored with 20 homers, though, so far, anyway. And he's filled in 322 vital plate appearances playing everywhere across the infield. If there's a silent reason the team is where it is, Gui could well be it.
"I think it says a lot about a guy that he's willing to be humble and do what's right for the team," said manager Kate Fiscus after Gui's blast. "It's not everyone who can swallow the idea of being a part-time player, but I let him know early on that I wanted to get him on the field as often as I could. I don't know where I'd be without his best. He's a real leader, too.0He's always ready to lend me a helping hand, sometimes even just sitting there on the bench. He really knows how to make a manager happy."
Gui didn't reveal what Hickman's text said, beyond the fact that it was nice to be congratulated.
"John was a great player," Gui said after the game. "And he's a good coach. I love talking baseball with him when the whole Krill family is together in the spring."
