Roster Expansion Brings Fresh Arms

August 28, 2061: Forever Land While the club works to win an important series against division rivals San Fernando, good news comes in the forms of veteran righthanded hurlers Micheal Dixon (36) and Angel Villanueva (29), both of whom were signed to minor league deals two weeks prior, and have had a quick dip into AAA Pasco's waters to get tuned up.

Villanueva has been a steady bullpen presence in the BBA for several years, was released from his $3.9M contract by Long Beach earlier this season after posting rugged 5.07 ERA in 40 games. Since joining the Krill organization, he made three starts in Pasco, posting a 2-0 record to go with his 1.50 ERA. With Francisco Ortiz imploding as a starter, Kate Fiscus, the Krill's ... um ... unorthodox ... manager has said she plans to have him start for the foreseeable future.

"What do we have to lose?" she said. "Besides, I like having Francisco sitting right beside me where he can soothe my nerves."

Villanueva's 4-pitch repertoire and his past history of sub 100 FIP- scores suggests that he should have some success out there, but the truth will become self-evident on its own.

Dixon signed a 1-season $1.4M deal with Sacramento last off-season, but was released in June. He pitched in 15 games with the Mad Popes, registering a save and a 4.85 ERA. At 36, he's probably at the end of his career, but the Krill are hoping that his veteran presence will make a difference with a team full of players who could be on the brink of turning a corner this season.

"Micheal's won a ring," Fiscus said. "And I've asked him to wear it around the clubhouse every other day or so, just so the guys know what one looks like. Familiarity breeds... um ... something. Or, at least, I'd say diamonds are a girl's best friend."

The 36-year-old will likely throw innings from the pen, which will also be helpful since the whole group has been worked fairly heavily to date.

"I'm looking forward to pitching again," Dixon said. "I feel like I've got a score to settle."
