ORIGIN STORY
Stephen Schmidtwas selected to little fanfare down in the tenth round of the 2054 draft. At the time he was your classic 4/6/5 filler who you’d just expect to slurp up a few at bats and try to get the girls interested before he fell out of baseball and went to State Junior college to learn how to draw an unemployment check. It didn’t help that his psych profile said he was lazy as a toad on a rock, and perhaps not the most comfortable with new things.

He was assigned to Rookie ball in Ogden, and managed to see 11 plate appearances before going home for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

WHAT’S HAPPENED SINCE
But somewhere along the way, his get up and go kinda got up and went (yeah, I know that's not what Aerosmith meant...deal). That 4/6/5 now reads 6/10/6, and even though the numbers haven’t been as eye-catching as they might (Schmidt has pretty much camped out in Ogden) word travels. With the club insiders buzzing, the girls are definitely interested. The baseball like he cannon that his bat promises to be, and the cannon that his arm already is. He had ten outfield assists each of the past two seasons.

The girls, well, that’s a cannon of a different type, we’d guess.

The club was interested enough that despite never having posted a positive WAR in three seasons at Rookie Ball, they sent the kid to the Max-Power Work Lab in the off season, where progress was made, but where internal reports say that the kid might need another pass. “Someone needs to explain to him that that sweet swing could be worth millions,” said one scout. “If he can concentrate, the sky’s the limit.”

The numbers prove the case. He only had 11 at bats in his first year, then dropped negative WAR, he broke out at the end of 2057 and finished with 14 homers. The club sent him to A-ball early this season simply to get him reps. That didn’t really pan out, but now he’s back to Short A, where the team hopes a little coaching up will be a good thing.

WHAT'S TO COME
The kid’s got a lot a learning to do. But the team is excited to see how he pans out. He’s got that big beautiful swing, after all. The kind that makes a super special sound when bat hits ball. And some scouts are saying he might be one of those rare lefties who can play without a platoon mate. It’s early, though. Time will tell.

The club would certainly like to see him rake enough in Short A to earn a late-season jump back to A-ball. If hat happens, and maybe another pass through Max Power works out, we could see AA next year, AAA in 2060, and an arrival in 2061.

Will it happen?

That, of course, is a question for the next report card.
