LOUGANIS NEXT MAN UP
May 16, 2063 Just as things were beginning to look up for bedraggled shortstop Keith Williams, news today comes that a high ankle sprain will put him on the shelf for as many as six weeks. "These injuries are hard to project," said manager Kate Fiscus. "Well take a look at it in a few weeks and see, but the docs tell me it will be six weeks, so that's the plan for now."
What isn't as well understood is what the team will do to respond to the injury. For the short-term, Agatone Louganis will slide over from second base to handle the role. Louganis has been a pleasant surprise since arriving with the team in a springtime deal with Rosenblatt. Fiscus said she'd already been planning to find him more time, and will likely install him and his .370 OBP into the leadoff role for the time being. His glove has been solid at second, and the team hopes it will translate to the other side of the infield.
Fiscus was evasive when asked about a possible trade to bring in a established shortstop.
"I think that's always something the fans are thinking about, but our identity is more of a Band of Brothers kind of thing. We don't have the big guns or the big names, but when everyone pitches in, we can do great things. So I see it as being a case where one of our guys went down, so it's time for someone else to step up and shine."
The timing of the injury is particularly unfortunate, because Williams, who was already having a solid defensive season, had begun to lift himself out of the offensive doldrums that he'd been steeping in all season so far. His .201 average belies the fact that he'd added 45 points to his OPS in the previous week.
"It bothers me," Williams admitted. "I'm a better hitter than that. Now all I'll see for the next month or so is that .201 flashing in front of me."
