April 11, 2060: Bikini Atoll – The Bikini Krill made a bit of a statement in trading for centerfielder Mike Cox in the off season, and Fernando Bushey heard it loud and clear. “I think they were saying I couldn’t handle the role,” Bushey said last night after going 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBI, leading the Pasco Platypus to an easy victory. On the season, the 23-year-old is slashing .349/.378/.837, with seven homers in 10 games.
As a response, well, that’s some response.
“To be honest,” Bikini GM Ron Collins said, we already know he can hit here. I mean, we were a little worried about his contact, but it was mostly about the glove.” Those fears were not unfounded. Despite some thought that Bushey’s glovework had improved in the minors, he played 33 games in center last year and posted a -2.9 Zone Rating. That really won’t do. And in that same small 10-game sample size, the centerfield leather has been … adequate. It’s enough to suggest that he might have to move to a corner to be most valuable.
“That’s fine by me,” Bushey said. “I just want to play on the atoll.”
