Yeoman Pitcher Sees Day In Limelight
October 15, 2060: Marshall Islands – Domingo Becerra is not a name that many people think of when they think of the BBA, and yet maybe they should. At 182 wins, Becerra, the guy they called “Flex,” is, after all, the all-time victory leader of the storied franchise.
“Those were the days when winning meant something, too,” the 74-year-old Becerra said when he was made aware the team wanted to honor him. “One ot the things I ‘m most proud of was that I went out there every time they called my number, and that I went out there with the idea I was not coming out.” Becerra completed 30 games in his career, including four in 2018. The entire team completed exactly one game this year.
Flex, who was known as a crafty lefty, pitched his entire 16-year career with the organization, finishing with a record of 182-146, with 2,270 strikeouts and only 754 walks. His best season was arguably 2016, when he went 18-8 while posting a 3.38 ERA.
“Longevity is the closest thing to God, they say,” Becerra said. “I wasn’t the best player on the team, but I did my thing, and we won a lot of games.” Which is true. The team (in Seattle those days) went to the post season eight times in his sixteen seasons. And in three of the years the club missed the postseason, they won 98, 97, and 91 games—something Becerra is proud of. “I always said I’d rather be a medium fish on a winning team than a big fish on a loser.”
He will be inducted during the team’s Winter Meeting luncheon, an event that fans will be able to attend through owner P. Moreau Westmoreland’s newest Virtual Community Resource.
