2040.05 - The Long Beach Independent - Early Exit For Surfers

Post by Lane » Fri Dec 06, 2019 9:24 am

October 8, 2040
Long Beach, CA

After an impressive start by Danya Tchekanov allowed the Surfers to steal the first game of the Geoghegan series in Omaha, the team couldn't get the pitching and hitting to sync up well enough to win more than that.

A Game 2 gem from 34 year old Jimmy Greenwood (8.1 innings, 2 ER) wasn't enough, as the Surfers were only able to put 1 run on the board, despite a lefty-heavy lineup.

The pivotal Game 3, at home, will haunt Long Beach fans all offseason. Feliciano Rafael, the 27 year old righty and prize offseason acquisition was not able to overcome the issues that have marred his 2040 campaign. Despite an excellent 3.68 FIP and 4.3 WAR, he struggled with earned runs all season, allowing a 5.33 ERA. In this game, he allowed 7 runs in 3.2 innings, on just 7 hits (3 HR) and 1 walk. The offense put up 6 runs for the day, but it was not enough to overcome the disastrous start by Rafael.

With another chance to push the series back to Omaha, the Surfers turned to Cris Rios, prize free agent acquisition of 2037. Though he split time between the bullpen and rotation this year, the team turned to him due to his success against right handed hitters, of which Omaha had plenty. He gave an admirable effort, allowing just 3 runs in 5.1 innings, but again the offense fell just short.

The Surfers finished the season at 89-73, second place in the newly reformed Frick League Pacific. The win total is the highest since 2034, and 2040 is the 8th playoff appearance in the 11 years since the 2029 Championship win.
