2029.16 - The Long Beach Independent -Playoffs!

September 20, 2029
Louisville, KY

The champagne was flowing in the visitors locker room at Louisville Waterfront Park as the Long Beach Surfers celebrated the clinching of their first postseason appearance since their 2012 Wild Card appearance. The Surfers, fresh off of a 3/4 series win against Calgary, took 3/4 in Louisville to clinch a Wild Card berth and a share of 2nd place in the FLP.

The race for the division title is still very close, with Long Beach trailing California by one game. The Sufers hit the road to Vancouver (81-77) tonight while the Crusaders head to Madison to take on the 62-96 Wolves. Long Beach and California are each 7-6 against their upcoming opponents, so while it appears that the Crusaders have an advantage on paper, the race for the division is still very much alive.

With one win in their next four, LBC will clinch at least 2nd place in the FLP which guarantees them a non-Wild-Card playoff berth. Of course they would prefer to win the division outright.

The Frick League Wild Card (2 spots) is still undecided as we head into the final 4 games of the season. The Seattle Storm, after leading the FLP most of the year, are 2 games up on Calgary and Omaha for the first spot.

Louisville and Yellow Springs have also earned playoffs spots by virtue of locking up the top two spots in the Frick League Heartland. Over in the Johnson League, Jacksonville and Montreal are fighting for the division, though they have both clinched the top two spots. Huntsville has won the JLS, with Las Vegas clinching 2nd. Atlantic City has clinched the first Wild Card spot in the JL, leaving New Orleans (81-77) and Brooklyn (79-79) to battle it out for the final playoff spot.

Thank you! After all my pitching injuries I was really regretting trading away Estes, but it ended up working out.

Don't forget about this:
Velasco No-Hits Fighting Pheasants: In a brilliant performance at Caliente come Infierno Stadium, Santa Fe pitcher Júlio Velasco entered an elite group by tossing a no-hitter today against the Brooks Fighting Pheasants.

In the effort, he fanned 3 and walked 2, leading the Young Guns to a 4-0 victory.

"I was getting my off-speed stuff over so they couldn't sit on the fastball," Velasco said in the clubhouse after the game. "My guys made some nice plays behind me, too, and cut off several hits."

In 28 starts this season Velasco has compiled a 8-11 record and a 5.60 ERA.
