2059.03 - The Long Beach Independent - My Oh My, Emilio!

REYES HAS REA'S NUMBER
In midst of breakout season, Reyes has a game for the ages

September 25, 2059
Long Beach, CA

The Long Beach Surfers defeated the Hawaii Tropics this evening by a score of 9-3. Or, more accurately, Emílio Reyes beat the Tropics by hitting not one, but two grand slams against Tropics pitcher Gerardo Rea.

Reyes came to the plate with the bases loaded in the fifth inning, took a strike, and sent the next pitch 372 feet over the right field wall. It was his 18th home run of the season, and gave the Surfers a 4-3 lead.

The very next inning was deja vu as Reyes stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded. This time he didn't bother taking the first pitch, as he hit it 370 feet to right field, not only to the same section in the bleachers, but the very same row.

"It was unbelievable," remarked Sufers superfan Chad, who caught Reye's second home run ball. "I missed the one in the 5th inning, I was grabbing smash burgers for the fam and, when I got back to my seat, my boys were telling me about the grand slam, and I was bummed to have missed that moment. But, next thing I know, he hits another one our way! I couldn't believe it, but I reached my hands up and caught it. What a moment."

Chad declined to say which of his boys would be the recipient of the baseball, but indicated that he wasn't looking forward to the fight over it on the car ride home.

Reyes, 25, is having a career year in his sixth BBA season. The 2054 first round draftee has been primarily a center fielder in his time in the BBA, but has always made an effort to work on his defense all over the diamond. It's paid off over the past two seasons, as he appeared in 42 games in the infield last year, and nearly two dozen this year. After the injury to Steveland Morris, Emílio enthusiastically embraced a new role as starting shortstop.

With the Surfers heading for the playoffs, Reyes will undoubtedly be a huge part of the team's outcome for the remainder of the season.

So many good youngish CF in the BBA right now. Santos, Bayou, Reyes, Tingle, Johnson, Rooney, Jahnke. Even Cano and Luchessi at 32 are still in prime.

Not to mention Gonzales. Plays RF for me due to Tingle being so good in CF, but he was positive ZR in CF in about half the season that Tingle missed.
