WHIV 2061.4- Checking The Locks: Starting Pitchers

Post by recte44 » Thu Oct 24, 2024 5:01 pm

Sure Fire Locks (3):
Carlos Berrera (5STU, 7MOV, 5CON, 6PBABIP, 9HRR)- He hasn't been able to make it through a season healthy yet. In fact, last year's 16 games started marked a BBA career high for him. Yet he's the Hustlers' #1 starter? I thought these guys were planning to make a splash. Berrera, in fact, is quite good when healthy. He managed to earn 2.4 WAR in just 102.2 innings for the Hustlers last year. Stay healthy, Carlos.

Bret Harrell (6STU, 6MOV, 6CON, 6PBABIP, 7HRR)- Harrell had a weird 2060 season on the surface. Underneath the numbers however you can see it was really just a case of bad luck. His BABIP was a career high .332 (.304 career) and his FIP was 4.27 compared to his actual 5.26 ERA.

Owen Geddes (7STU, 6MOV, 7CON, 6PBABIP, 6HRR)- He's the best pitcher in GBC history. No debate necessary. Can he pitch successfully in the BBA at 35 years old and onward? The Hustlers hope they got this one right.

Near Locks (1):
Reese Newsome (9STU, 4MOV, 9CON, 7PBABIP, 3HRR)- Whatever bad luck Harrell got, Newsome had similar good luck, and therefore had a pretty damn good 2060 season. The Hustlers can live with his gopher balls (37 allowed last year) as long as he keeps runners off of the basepaths most of the time (1.08 WHIP last year, 1.19 WHIP career).

Trying To Break In (3):
Claudio Rodriguez (5STU, 5MOV, 5CON, 6PBABIP, 5HRR)- Obviously the Hustlers want Rodriguez to be a part of their rotation moving forward, and hopefully before too long he will be atop the rotation. Great start last year in 13 games (9 starts) and showed positive progression in the offseason.

Gilberto Trevino (6STU, 5MOV, 6CON, 6PBABIP, 5HRR)- He'll start spring as the "sixth" starter, but is ticketed for Milwaukee (AAA) as he's in his last option year. The Hustlers will also try other guys throughout the spring, in all likelihood. There is always a chance they might yet sign a veteran as well.

Breaking In The Back Door (0):
None- will discuss everyone else in the Relief Pitchers article, coming shortly.

We believe the bullpen will make up for it.

That 5th spot may rotate a bit until it sticks.

Berrera got hurt in each of his first two spring training starts. Now we are sniffing around Jose Barron again

This is shaping up to be completely different.

1) We lost out on Barron. Montreal gave him a three year deal for some reason. Yikes.
2) Berrera keeps getting hurt. We put him on the 7-day IL and he seems ticketed for the bullpen, since we can't count on him.
3) Rodriguez is hurt too. He's also on the 7-day IL, and he might start the season in AAA to ramp up.
4) We took Newsome out of the rotation after a rough start, now he's back in.
5) Mauro Rojas is probably going in the rotation.
6) We also put "Phenom" Gonzalez back in the rotation mix.

Talk about a complete change of direction. Opening Day rotation now looks like:
Geddes, Harrell, Rojas, Gonzalez, Newsome
