WHIV 2060.11- Hustlers Run Out Of Patience With Harrell

Post by recte44 » Mon Aug 19, 2024 2:57 pm

This was the year I was finally going to get my due respect. I was going to be the ace of the Las Vegas Hustlers. What the hell happened???

Bret Harrell ran all kinds of scenarios through his mind. That's all he's done lately. Worry about this, think about that, regret this and that. Nothing worked.

I've never had a stretch like this before. I don't even know what I'm doing wrong.

Now he's been summoned to the office of manager Henry Rectenberg to "chit chat".

I know what that means. I'm no dummy. Damn it. I never thought I'd be anywhere near this situation. What the hell is going on?

He walked into the offices and skittishly knocked on Rectenberg's open office door. "Hey, Skip," he said with sadness dripping from his voice. "What's up?"

Rectenberg motioned for the lefty to have a seat. The manager of the Hustlers' sighed heavily. "Well, Bret, you know we've hoped that you'd just come out of this slump on your own by now. It's just not happening. Clearly, you're all up in your head. We need you pitching like you have for the last few years, not like this."

Harrell dropped his head, knowing what was coming next. "I know, Skip."

Rectenberg's next words seemed almost as stunning for him to say as they were for Harrell to hear. "We're going to send you to Milwaukee for a spell. Get you back on the right track. Don't think so much. Just throw. You'll be back here as quick as you make it. Just pitch."

Harrell nodded, accepting both his fate and the path back. A hypothetical load of bricks appeared to have left his shoulders. "I'll do that, Skip. I'll be back soon. I know I will."

Rectenberg stood up. "You have to. We need you, Bret. Just go have some fun, and we'll see you in a week or two."

Harrell shook the managers hand, went to his locker, packed up his stuff and went upstairs to get his travel agenda. Next time I take the mound, it'll be in a minor league game. If that's not a reality check....

He's giving up almost 2 times the hits per 9 than he did last season albeit in a small sample size. Letting him suck in AAA may help turn it around. Can't hurt.
