What Happens in Vegas 1995.1- Coaching staff named

Post by recte44 » Mon Apr 19, 2010 5:09 pm

The Las Vegas Hustlers are ready to re-open for business and get this 1995 season underway. To begin preparations for the first season back in the resurrected MBBA, let's take a look at the Hustlers coaching staff. There are certainly some familiar names on the staff.

Manager: Keith "Captain" Minuso

Minuso, a seven year Hustlers vet from 1973-1979, was one of the major parts of Las Vegas history. Minuso was the picture of consistency in his career but unfortunately since his career in the MBBA started at age 31 he'll never get the adulations that a younger player with more years put in may have. "Captain" Minuso is the ultimate team leader, and that made him an easy decision to bring on as manager.

Bench Coach: Hayfu Sobah

Sobah made his name as a powerful middle infielder mostly with the Marquette Suns (before they became the Madison Wolves), but he did have a brief half-season stint with the Hustlers in 1981. Since they've added Sobah they were also able to reach an agreement with the Marquette Suns original ownership to bring them on board as the Hustlers' AAA affiliate. Sobah will lend his knowledge to Minuso on the bench, and being able to speak three languages is a skill that cannot be overlooked.

Hitting Coach: Elroy Futon

When you think of the Las Vegas Hustlers, you think of Elroy Futon. He was one of the most exciting players of the 1970's, and like Minuso only his age prevents him from being among the statistical greats. Futon's leadership, natural hitting ability, and willingness to work with young players will make him a huge asset to the organization in his post-playing days.

Pitching Coach: Thomas Holden

Holden is perhaps the least known player on this list, although Las Vegas fans recall him with warm memories of an unlikely 1976 Landis Memorial Championship run. Picked up early in the season from Washington as a stopgap measure, Holden ended up going 17-7 for the Hustlers and making the 2nd (and last) All-Star appearance of his career. Holden's career never reached the same heights again and he retired after the 1980 season, but his passion for teaching pitching remained. He has been operating his own academy and working on developing biomechanics programs. This year he brings his groundbreaking techniques to the Hustlers organization.
