Fans and front office execs alike were pleased with the news that veteran shortstop Zebediah "Yahoo!" Williams had signed a three year contract extension to stay with the Las Vegas Hustlers through 1990.
Williams, 34 years old, agreed to terms on a 3 year extension for just $580,000 per season. "Obviously, it's a bargain," said Hustlers General Manager Matt Rectenwald. "Yahoo's defense is stellar, and any offense he gives us is a bonus."
For Williams' part, it was an easy choice. "Las Vegas believed in me after Madison released me, and I have nothing but loyalty to this organization," Williams explained. "I want to help them win a Landis Trophy any way I can."
For now, Williams remains the Hustlers starting shortstop but he knows that with several promising youngsters coming up fast, including Donald Noboru, that his time as a starter may not be the whole three years. "I've had my time, I've had 2000 hits and some Zimmer Awards," Williams said. "I'm a team player and that's the way it's going to be. Hustlers for life."
