Franco Retires

In surprising news, Calgary announced that manager Tony Franco has retired. One of the legends of Calgary baseball, the star third baseman played 19 seasons for the team, coached in the system for 25 years of which the past 7 have been in Calgary.

The team thought hitting coach Hector Cano, now 70, might retire after this season, but there hadn't been any talk of the 62 year old Franco hanging it up. He has taken the team to the playoffs in 3 of the past 5 years and came within a game this season of winning his third Frontier title.

Franco did not release a statement and the team didn't have any further information regarding his retirement or the reason for it. Fans in Calgary are in disbelief and many expressed concern that his retirement was health related.

Speculation immediately began as to who his replacement might be with some thinking bench coach Jefferson Pierce might be best suited for the job. Also sure to get serious consideration are AAA Saint Paul manager Juan Karyabwite and AA Edmonton skipper Bilbo Baggins.
