Baggins, King of the Mountain in Calgary

The Calgary Pioneers have announced that Bilbo Baggins will replace Tony Franco in the dugout this season as the team's new manager. Baggins is making the journey from (AA) Edmonton, a team he lead to the playoffs in his first and only season in the dugout.

"We are thrilled to have Bilbo carry the torch for us and know he is the right guy to bring a ring to Calgary," GM Kevin Dickson said. "He has only managed a few seasons for us, but I know he is the one."

Baggins began his managerial career in 2056 and managed the team's Rookie ball affiliate for 5 seasons before moving to Short A for a year and then to Edmonton last season. His team's made the playoffs in every season but one and his career record is 329-227 .592.

"It is like I was there and back again," Baggins said.

Baggins played for Calgary for 11 seasons from 2027-2037. The middle earther...ere infielder primarily played SS but also played some 2B and 3B. His 8 consecutive seasons as Calgary's starting shortstop is second only to HOF Jack Hanski's 9. It is also fun to note that during Baggins time with the Pioneers, the starting 3B was Tony Franco, the man he is replacing.

It was a surprise to see the sea pass over AAA manager Juan Karyabwite, a 2 time manager of the year, for the older, yet less experienced Baggins. We will see how deep the sting is and if it breeds any bad blood.

Replacing Baggins in Edmonton will be former Pioneer 1B Dan Leonard moving over from his role as the team's hitting coach. Hall of Famer Mario Soriano is moving up from Quebec (A) to take over the hitting coach position.
