New Owner in Negotiations With Calgary
Calgary's new owner, Paul Radbourn has begun negotiations with the city of Calgary for the construction of a new ballpark. This should help to calm down some of the controversy generated over the past two years by Radbourn's late father, George who had threatened to relocate the team if he didn't get the deal he wanted. George passed away midway through the season after only running the team since 2058.
Charles "Big Hoss" Radbourn, a distant relation of the great "Old Hoss" bought the club in 2005 and ran it until his death in 2058. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Radbourn moved to Calgary after watching the city host the 1988 Winter Olympics. Once in Calgary he opened up the first Hoss Burger Restaurant, now one of the largest chains in Canada. His real wealth came from oil, after a large deposit was found on land that he had come to own under questionable circumstances.
A suffering Cleveland Indians fan as a child, Radbourn always thought he could do better. Buying the Pioneers, then called the Marauders, gave him the chance and he brought Calgary 2 championships and numerous playoff appearances during his ownership. Radbourn's son, Charles "no nickname" Radbourn, had been estranged from his father for years, only joining the family business when "Big Hoss" was in his nineties. It was clear upon senior's death in 2058 that the son was not cut out for the job.
Almost immediately Junior started looking more at the money than the team and demanded that the city build him a new ballpark or he would move or sell the team. Controversy ensued and bridges were burned. There weren't too many tears in the clubhouse when it was announced that he had passed.
Paul, named for Calgary star closer Paul Stroud, is a baseball man like his grandfather. He worked his way from the concession stands to the front office with the idea that to really run the club you needed to know it from bottom to top. When eulogizing his father he said that the fans shouldn't fear the Pioneers moving out of town and reassured them that he would work with the city to solve the stadium dilemma.
The Stockyard, Calgary's park, was built in 2024 and is the oldest in the BBA. It is estimated that the maintenance costs are higher than financing a new stadium would be. With a young winning team on the field, maybe they will get a new park sooner rather than later.
