Faroe Islands are irresistible: red-tiled roofs perched on sheer cliffs, wild orchids lining sheep trails, the hush of mist before sunrise: "“I hear the puffins get rowdy at dawn,” RC joked.

With a game left in the Long Beach series followed by an off-day, Des Moines will rest stopper Scott Everard (1-4, 17sv, 3.09, 47g, 81.2 ip) the two days and then send him out to start one of the games at Vancouver before the All-Star Break. That could be as early as Wednesday. Des Moines also intends to get José Barrón his first start as a Kernel in the same series versus the Mounties. The Colombian has appeared in four games for Des Moines with a 4.26 ERA in 6.1 innings.

Barrón's fellow former Fox pitcher Raúl Castanelda tossed a shutout against Long Beach, allowing six singles and one walk, and has been given permission to take a week-long vacation in Faroe Islands, Denmark. Asked by reporters from Cape Fox if Des Moines intended to keep Castanelda in the starting rotation, the Kernels front office said: "Yup. If he can master Long Beach he can master any team."

Everard will be limited to 75 pitches in his start. Everard last season threw a career-high 131.1 innings in a record 79 appearances. This season he is projected to appear in 90 games and throw 155 innings. "He threw 73 [pitches] in back-to-back games last week; let's see what he can do as a starter," manager Mel Jenkins said. Everard is currently third in 2063 All Star Game voting tabulation for the five starting relief pitcher slots. He only All Star game inclusion was in 2057 when he finished the season with a 1.80 ERA in his then high 120.1 IP. He has no starts in 721 games; that will; change this week.

Cannot believe Castanelda threw a shutout. What kind of crazy corn magic do y'all have out there.
