Des Moines intends to break camp with 25 players on her active roster as she takes the party bus up IH-35 to greater M-SP, where she'll open regular season play with three games against the Twinsies. Expect Le Metronome, Micah Harrington, and Arnold Cantrell to start. The "Big 3" had spring ERAs of 4.67, 3.94, and 1.45 respectively.
The Kernels turned in a 15-15 performance this Spring Training, which is about what every Frick League team did, except poor Madison, who went 6-24. After a day off Wednesday, when the Kernels will enjoy a team-building exercise in Banff, she'll return to host the newly-renamed Brook Park Brownies at the locale Kum & Go. JR predicts a 6-0 start for the Kernels this season. "Yes, and after we go 6 and oh, I'll be headed back to Don't-Bother-Me, Alaska, and Esteban will resume daily operations"—under the eye of 70-year-old owner Walter Wilhelm, who has reasonably been talked into an expectation of Win Now! instead of Build a Dynasty!, a goal he had after returning from Machu Picchu and who knows what he inhaled in Peru.
The active roster will include 12 pitchers and 13 non-pitchers, with the same guys as last year, with the two exceptions of, first, the Kernels only ML free-agent signing this offseason, reliever PEPE!, and, second, rookie utility guy Roman Gonzalez. Kevin Thistle, released at the end of last season and then later signed to a $500K MiL contract, could join the major league squad after the Brook Park series, or DM could go with a sexier selection. Odds-on it won't be a pitcher, as DM intends to go with 12 pitchers until further notice in what will be a reconfigured rotation strategy.
Ken'ichi Okubo, who is probably the team's biggest lover of the D-Lab Kernel Popper™, "successfully completed training to improve his outfield defense." RFer Julio Perez improved his stealing technique, let's specify that is his base-stealing technique. Three other athletes in the DMO successfully completed programs, none of whom are on the ML squad. The Triple-A team has undergone a starting pitching face lift, and everybody over 30 has been released. The only 30-y.o. guy on El Paso is now 'The Turk'.
