Rah rah. Go team.
The Kernels close out the regular season with a four-game homestand versus the Louisville Sluggers, in a match that might be the inverse of season expectations for some. Louisville, no doubt an up-and-coming team and one because of which Des Moines is going to keep improving itself in order to stay ahead of in the standings, them and Chicago too, have not had the season that some pundits expected, and the Kernels, meanwhile, have outplayed the expectations of others.
Meanwhile. Back in the cornfields that surround Kid Krauss's Kum & Go Kourtyard, renamed, of course, for Kum & Go paying $5mm to the club before the current season. The Kids (89-65) are expected to employ the four best starters—Dobbs, Clayton, Cantrell, Akers—in what they hope will be the series that finally clinches a wildcard spot for the not quite at this moment Piping-Hot Kernels. The team has chosen September to post their worst monthly record, now 4-11, and have lost whatever momentum the team had accrued after winning 18, 19, and 20 the previous months. Still, there's that 10-4 victory yesterday over the Omaha Cyclones that may augur better results. The Kernels scored more than four runs for only the third time this month. Recent problems have been blamed on various things: the hot summer, the team being tired, the team being hyped, and even to mismanagement of the bullpen, which seemed to overly use Alonso Amaya last week, when he was 6.14 in three games, while the team's most capable relief arms were too idle than called for. Amaya (12-7), for one, has been benched for the series versus Louisville despite an 8-1 record and 3.11 ERA at the Kum & Go.
2B Miguel 'Thrillseeker' Martínez (33 HRs) will be back in the starting lineup after a ten-day hiatus due to injury. And 3B Félix 'Matchbox' Parreno stole three more bases last week to tie his career best 46. He has the green light to steal at will. It can be hoped that the 35-y.o., 2.6 WAR third sacker won't get injured running with abandon. Micah Harrington is expected to ride the bench after a 0-3 start with the Kernels since being acquired from New Orleans.
The Kernels have a magic number of four to get into the playoffs. Hawaii has a MN of 5, while VAN and SFB have a MN of 9. The DMO is hoping the Kernels can right a ship that's faltered lately, hot summer or not.
