In the first contest, a paltry 19K fans showed up to cheer the home team, which entered the game 20-26. The 37-y.o. Brody Picot allowed five Kernels on base in six innings, struck out eight, and got a no-decision for the effort. 36-y.o. [what is this, a team of Saurs?] Félix Vidaca got the win as newly acquired Pedro Soto had his worst outing of the season, allowing four earned runs in 1/3 of an inning. Run-ming 'Nasty Nas' Gui hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh, which brought fans right back to their feet after the stretch. The fans, and the Krill, were pretty quiet the next three games.
Tommy 'Stew' Akers grabbed the headlines in Game 2, throwing a three-hit shut out and facing only 30 batters. Akers is having a shit start, and this win—in his 10th start—lowered his ERA to 6.85. Masakado Matsunaga had four hits, including two over the fence, for his 9th and 10th home runs in 40 starts. A man named Jon Brown lost his third out of four decisions.
In Game 3, the Poppers scored nine runs in the first two innings, seven off of Takashi Nakamura; the starter gave up homers to 1b Huckleberry 'Haiku' Flinn, CFer Dan Morris, and DH Carlos Rodríguez. The 25-y.o. rookie DH also hit a home run in the 2nd, tying for the team-lead of 13 with 2b Miguel Martinez. Rookie Ken'ichi Okubo, playing left, also hit a round tripper as part of his four-hit evening. DM's starter Alonso 'Sandman' Amaya also gave up seven runs, but he had an 11-7 lead when he left in the sixth. Scott Everard and Everett Sutphin prevented further damage, and the final was 12-7. The barely legal Al Schumann had SS Keith Williams each had three hits for the Krill.
In the series finale the Krill's 3B Kata Ishibashi hit a two-run shot in the first, and that was all he/she wrote for the Bikini offense. Their relievers, Masami Kichida and Vidaca (remember him?) each gave up two runs, although it was the latter who surrendered the hits that scored the Des Moines four. This was capped by a two-run shot by RF Júlio Pérez in the seventh. Garth Dobbs (2-5, 4.20) got the win in seven innings, and the same two relievers as the day before finished out the game.
Des Moines headed home with 24-26 record, sending the Krill to 21-29.
