The crew at the local Kum & Go, headed by owner Walter Wilhem, who is hopping mad about the Kernels losing $17mm in '62—wait, what? Wait, Walt? Wait, Walt is no longer "concerned?" Now he has switched his mood to "undecided." For a guy who wanted the Kernels do achieve a winning record, "I think we've done that," manager Mel Jenkins said.
"Aww yes." Walter says. "Winning 90+ games in the conditions and strictures the league puts us under, we've done well."
I'm not sure what strictures Walt means, maybe he meant structures?
"Strictures, structures, all the above," WW says, "now we've got that stadium tax coming up—again!"
"Hey, won't our bonus cash cover that?" Jenkins asks.
"Bonus cash, bogus cash, ain't got none," WW says.
"Boss, we, er, you, you have, the team has, the slush fund has $12mm."
"How much do we have to shell out on the Kum&— Heyyyyy, did we ever get credited for that stadium renaming?
"It went into the slush fund, Walter."
"All right, so we've got, what?"
"$12.2mm, less $4.4 for upkeep."
"What do you think about the grass?"
"Didn't know we got a new shipment. Esteban has mentioned any—" Jenkins says.
"I am talking about the stadium grass we put down two years ago," Walter says.
"Oh, right," Jenkins says. "Well, Year 1 didn't see much change, except a losing season despite a +50 run differential. But this season, 2062. we had one of the healthiest teams in the league. One of the least cumulative IL days in the universe."
"What about Walt, Jr, I mean Flinn?" WW asks.
"Oh, yeah, our IL number went up by putting Haiku on the 60-day. But that was most a protective measure. Prolly coulda used him in the series against Hawaii, but c'est la vie."
"Pardon?"
"C'est la vie. That's life, that's the way the cook—"
"So Flinn is ready for the new Development Center, uh, Structure?"
"Yes, Walt," Jenkins says.
"Hey! Where's JR? shouldn't it be him giving me these updates?"
"I think he bailed, boss," Jenkins says, "Noting your mood."
"Mood? ,,, So the new D-Lab will be ready?"
"Most definitely, got a good group of German engineers working away on it."
"God, was that them doing the blasting?" WW asks.
"Blasting? That was probably the construction at 7th and State." Jenkins says. "Not like we're running a meth lab under the D-Lab, ha ha. Although—"
"Although, what?" Walter says.
"Well, you know, we have you, Walt, and Jessie, and Flinn, and we had a Hector..."
"Anybody named Gustavo around?"
"I'll have to check the minors, boss."
So, anyhoo, the $7.8mm in BF will reduce the season loss by, well, $7.8mm, which brings the loss to about $10mm. And team news, fifty of 'em, can make up for that. And we'll have a surplus of $10mm for "cash on hand," that slippery category. Add whatever else we get in part points, maybe another $4mm, and we'll start 2063 with around $14mm COH. Not as good as $20mm, but what can you expect when you have $20mm in misc player expenses (aka eating Greg Shaw's and others' contracts). At least, we're projected for only a $2mm loss for 2063. Now, to make that up, let's talk contract negotiations and arby. TBC.
