The Kernels had their first back-to-back series sweeps [that I can recall] when they defeated Portland 3-1, 6-2, 5-1, 2-1 and the Frick HR-leading team hit only one out of the Kum & Go in the four games. "Those are some low scoring ball games, as far as we're concerned," AGM Esteban Costa said. "But that highlights our starting pitchers, and their combined ERA climbed the charts another point to 5th-best in the FL."
The weekend series with the Bears started with a suspended game Saturday that spilled into a Sunday double header, something that Kernels also haven't seen in awhile. Master of the Domain, Alonso Amaya (6-0, 2.92 at the Kum & Go), pitched two scoreless innings before the game was suspended. The "second starter" of the match, former Bear Salah Lutfi (1-1, 6.75) got eaten alive, figuratively speaking, by a home run by Yuu Suzuki, and relievers Mirchandani and Phillips apparently left their Bear spray in Yosemite, as SF's lead increased to 9-4 by stretch time. That included a three-run blast by Rafael 'Rat Face' Marquis off Phillips. The home team answered with two in the bottom of the 7th on a single by GM-voted All Star Júlio Pérez—the Kernels RBI leader (72)—but that's all the offense wrote.
Until Game 2 Sunday. That is, the regularly scheduled Sunday afternoon affair, when Des Moines put down the Bears, figuratively speaking, 8-4, with homers by GM-voted All Star 2B Miguel 'Thrillseeker' Martínez (21st) and the 7th by CFer Dan Morris. The Kernels were running wild against SFB: F. Parreno 2 (20) , A. Flinn (3) , P. Gongora (22), But both Flinn and former Kernel Sonny Bigalow left the field with injuries. Steven Clayton picked up his 11th win, and the Kernels hopefully have started a new win-streak of dynamic proportions.
Still 10 more games on the homestand, so Kum, and Go, as you like for some exciting Des Moines baseball. Your Piping-Hot Kernels are now 57-39, and 11-1 in July.
