On the Lam, 60.2 - New rivalry?! Shred'em.

Post by trmmilwwi » Thu Aug 08, 2024 7:06 am

It was quite the offseason for baseball in Texas and it had nothing to do with the Outlaws baseball club in San Antonio. News swept through the state when Governor Ted ”Rafi” Cruz II held a news conference in early November in Austin.

“It’s an exciting day in Austin!” Cruz started his speech. “We have a great group of baseball minds here with us to showcase the new stadium.”

For what seemed like years the citizens of Austin were attending neighborhood meetings to oppose the development of the new stadium in their backyards. Talks started way back in 2055 when demolition started on the site. The convention center was immediately next door but off to the side was a bustling neighborhood that continued the fight against gentrification.

Local resident Patty Flounder lead the charge and stated at the time, “We don’t want 55,000 people pissing in our front yards every night. These so called fans only want cheap beer and free giveaways. They don’t care about the people that live here.”

The momentum behind the opposition was strong but the plans continued anyways. It seemed like the consensus among the local news outlets was that the new GM of the San Antonio Outlaws was secretly planning to move the club away from San Antonio, where the team had struggled to draw fans in the early ‘50’s and planned to move to a new location. It wasn’t coincidence that there was a new stadium being developed a mere 80 miles north on I-35. At the time San Antonio released a press statement that read in part “The San Antonio Outlaws have no interest in leaving San Antonio as the fans are the most loyal in baseball. Not even Las Vegas fans can come close.” Everyone around the state thought that the club was moving, even those die-hards in San Antonio.

Rafi Cruz continued his press conference, “We know this group travelled far from their previous home in Alberta.”

The baseball team that was moving to the new stadium was not the ballclub 80 miles away that everyone was expecting. Rather it was the Edmonton Jackrabbits, a team from 2,200 miles away. It seems like the Outlaws were truthful when they said that they had no interest in relocating away from their current fan base in San Antonio. The club later said, “We are going to build a new stadium right next to the TAP Room and make it a state of the art facility. It will usher in the next generation of Outlaws fans and we are excited about that.”

Rafi continued his press conference that day back in November, “We will finally have a winning club once again here in the state of Texas!”

The GM of San Antonio immediately closed his laptop and stormed into his office. “This is war, how dare these canucks come down here and steal our fan base. Valenches better bring his A game because we are gonna make it our goal to hammer that team. Shredders, humph.”

Hour and a half bus ride will save both teams hypothetical travel money. They should both fitl their ballparks with fans from both teams so close.
