First place. First...place. Did anyone expect this kind of success this year from the Birmingham Bandits? Well, just ask their players.

"Did we think we'd be in first place in June? Of course we did," said second baseman Zack Google. "Why the heck wouldn't we think that? Who goes into the season excited to contend for third?"

Obviously not Birmingham, who muddled along for several weeks before reeling off eight of their last nine, putting themselves in first place for the first time since June of last season.

"I knew once we got our players back, we'd have a real shot to play well," said catcher Pat Larkin, who's carried the offense this season in the absence of three major contributors. "It's about time we put this thing together."

Birmingham continues to do it with their pitching staff, but the offense has kicked it into high gear as well during the winning streak. Birmingham has been held below four runs just once in the month of June, and just three times since May 20th.

"The offense is playing much better, yes, now that we have players in it," said manager Margarito Escobar. "I think we're for real. Let's make this a good one."
