News and Notes

Bedgood Signing Imminent

The Bandits and Damian Bedgood have been in negotations for several months over a new contract, but it appears that the two sides may finally reach a decision. Birmingham has upped the offer, reportedly, to $45 million over 5 years, and that number, slightly above where Bedgood had asked, should be enough to secure the top righty starting pitcher well into his thirties.

"We think we're close on the numbers," said GM Aaron Weiner. "It's just a matter of finalizing some details."

What To Do About Willie Greene?

Willie Greene has made himself relevant again. Although the team has dealt for Donnie Rotten, Greene, a solid bat at 2B and 3B, will definitely be in the starting lineup for the next month as starting 1B Jimmie Dugan rehabs a latissimus dorsi (upper back) strain.

The team chose Willie Greene to start over IP Daly because of his offensive ability, and the lefty has responded; hitting under .200 through April and just .222 through May with no home runs, Greene busted out in a big way this week to put himself back in the conversation as a starter.

"We've always seen Willie Greene as a starter, and there's a good chance he'll have his second base job back next year," Weiner said. "We've always liked Willie and we're looking forward to him being with us for a long time. If he continues to make a dent in the offense we'll give him a lot more at bats down the stretch."

Greene has already been signed for next season.

Tutmosa Out of the Rotation

Abdal Tutmosa has had his ups and downs this year, but with a lot more downs than ups, the veteran righty was demoted to the bullpen this week to make room for Bedgood's return.

"Well, yes, obviously I'm disappointed with my performance this year," said Tutmosa. "I know that the team was hoping that I'd be able to play as well as I did last year, but I guess I just haven't had it this season. I hope I get another chance."

Tutmosa was easily the Bandits' least effective starter, posting a 1-7 record with a 6.50 ERA and allowing a ghastly 23 home runs in 78 innings pitched. Down the stretch last year, Tutmosa posted a 3.18 ERA to help the Bandits into the playoffs after being signed midseason.

Bandits Meet All Demands on Draft Picks

To their great pleasure, Birmingham should have no problems signing their draft picks this season. The Bandits have met all their players' bonus demands (with a nice glut of cash to help out) and should start July 1 with a full roster of players.

"We're pleased to say that we've likely now signed all of our guys and we're going to go into the year fully stocked," said GM Weiner. "

Birmingham bonuses totaled over $1 million in total this season. The Bandits also signed their final draft pick, Edgardo Moran, with no bonus attached. Moran is another two-way prospect and will start the year in the bullpen.
