Dan Wachowski: Slap Happy

Dan Wachowski?

Yes, the man who may potentially be the greatest Rule 5 pick ever has done it again for the Bandits: Dan Wachowski hit .337 this season, tops among all MBBA shortstops other than the great Bopper Kengos. His rise to stardom has caused some Birmingham fans to bring "Slap Happy" and "Little Batman" signs to the ballpark.

"Well, I'm built a little more like Robin than Batman, but I'll take the compliment," said the diminutively-built Wachowski. "It's amazing to be in the big leagues and have fans."

Wachowski is likely to be the Birmingham starting shortstop for at least the next four years, as the Little Dude signed a four year extension this season. A completely average fielder at shortstop, Wachowski is as steady a player as they come for Birmingham.

"We thought that Hank Felicetti would be our shortstop of the future, but Dan's just come in and outhustled him and outplayed him and has forced him to third base," said manager Margarito Escobar. "Hank's still a starter for us, but Dan's an inspiration."

It remains to be seen how the Birmingham infield will shape up next year. The team is hoping to have top prospect Bobby Norton available to start at second base, and with Wachowski, Felicetti and Norton, the Birmingham infield defense could be even more spectacular than their outfield.

"I'm just happy to be part of his team," said Wachowski. "I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do next year."
