Judging by the reaction this morning on various social media websites, fans of the Indianapolis Grasshoppers were shocked to wake up this morning to hear that the rumors were more than rumors. Those rumors being that was moving to Omaha, Nebraska.
The Grasshoppers put out a press release late last night confirming the move sighting "low fan support" and "very-low city support" as reasons for the move. GM Justin Niles called this a "unique situation" beings that he was born and raised in Omaha and going back to the state that he called home is a wonderful opportunity.
The state of Nebraska is known for their fan support of college athletics as the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team have a sellout streak dating back to 1962.
"Nebraskan's love sports. There is no professional team there as the one they had decided to leave not only the state, but the country. This is a great opportunity to give them a winning baseball team that I have no doubt they will support." Niles said.
That seems to be easier said than done as Niles has a 167-232 record since taking over Indy a few seasons back. Even with that, Indy has shown a consistent improvement each season since Niles took over the front office.
The team last made the playoffs in 2026 which is also the last time the team has had a winning record. Since that season, the team has lost a minimum of 91 games each season with the low point being in 2029 before Niles took over at a 49-113 record. Since then the team has won 56,64, and last season 69 games during a massive overhaul of the farm system among other things.
