62.02 Montreal Extends Reynaldo Serrano

Last season, Montreal traded for middle infielder Reynaldo Serrano, who they intended to convert from second base to shortstop. Unfortunately, after only 18 games, Serrano tore his ACL and missed the remainder of the season. The Blazers are still counting on the 26-year-old as their shortstop going forward. His current contract expires after 2062. He will earn $4,326,000 this season.

Today the Blazers announced that they have agreed to a $27,840,000 extension with Serrano, covering 2063-2068. The last two years are team options.

Some pundits believe that it was foolish to commit to a minimum four-year extension with an oft-injured player, but team officials note that BBA-caliber shortstops are a scarce commodity. In addition, they are confident that the contract will be well below market value if he stays relatively healthy, freeing up money to be spent elsewhere.
