59.10 Montreal Trades for Veteran LH Hitter, Waives Aldo

Post by Bob Breum » Sun May 19, 2024 6:19 pm

Montreal reached a deal with Sacramento to acquire veteran left-handed hitter Nazeeh Ragheb, who is expected to take over the designated hitter role versus right-handed pitching. A corner outfielder by trade, Ragheb has lost a step over the years but can still play a serviceable right field.

Last season, Ragheb hit .287/.346/.404 against right-handed pitching while stealing 24 bases. He has elite speed and base stealing instincts, and Montreal is expected to give him the green light whenever he reaches base.

Sam Corkum

In return, Sacramento received former first round pick Sam Corkum, who has not lived up to the expectations imposed by his draft status. Last season, the then-only-18 Corkum hit .319/.316/.385 in Single-A in 227 plate appearances. This season, in AA, he hit .271/.294/.411 in just over 100 at-bats. Corkum was drafted as a second baseman, but the Blazers were also playing him at first base because of his limited defensive range and weak arm. He hits well for a middle infielder, but poorly for a corner infielder. He ranked #14 in the most recent Blazers Prospect Handbook.

Lineu Aldo

To make room on the active roster for Ragheb, Montreal placed Blazers superstar Lineu Aldo on irrevocable waivers. The 39-year-old Aldo played first base for Montreal last season, hitting .313/.347/.474 with 48 stolen bases, but he was not the same player when he arrived for spring training this season. His range at first was very limited, and his bat speed was but a shadow of his glory days. He was hitting .237/.250/.424 and had been benched in favor of younger players. He is owed $18,600,000 for 2059.

He’s a HoFer. Hopefully he plays somewhere so he can get 36 more hits.

I remember Aldo from my short stint in Montreal when he was in the minors. I always felt he would be special but what an unbelieve career he had. its always hard to separate from a legend.

You're crazy. 3,000 hits, 400+ HRs from an average defensive second baseman. 68 Career WAR.

The way Aldo's defense lumped so severely but he still has 9 running speed is dumb.

I’m sure I am crazy. He might get a vote from me after digging deeper, but he’s no slam dunk.
