The Blazers scouting department has been the talk of the club this week, after they discovered a 16-year-old phenom in the Punjab.
Husain Piracha has arrived at the team’s international complex and he is already turning heads. He is very green, as one might expect of a young man from a region better known for cricket than baseball, but scouts are very high on his bat.
Projecting a 16-year-old is largely a fool’s errand, but that’s the job. Here are the current projections for Piracha:
- Contact: 95th percentile ± 2%
- Gap power: 51st percentile ± 15%
- Power: 82nd percentile ± 9%
- Eye: 50th percentile ± 23%
- Avoid Ks: 91st percentile ± 4%
His defense is a different story. He’s 6’2”, 200 pounds, but he is not quick on his feet. He is a slow runner. His throwing arm is remarkably weak for someone of his build. At best, he may develop into a competent first baseman, but even that seems to flatter his defensive tools. None of that matters, however, if he can hit as well as scouts are projecting.
