Sticking Points 2040.10: Cannon Burst

Post by aaronweiner » Sun Oct 27, 2019 9:21 am

If Rockville knew that Dan Cannon was going to do this with a new contract, they'd have ripped up the old one years ago. Cannon, coming off his first Steve Nebraska Award in 2039, is right back at it again. Amazingly, he's somehow on pace for MORE than the 8.4 WAR he had last year, a mark which was just the third highest such mark in the last twenty years behind just Nelson Ramirez and Rockville's own Billy Chapel, Jr., in 2029. At this point it appears to be a two-man race between Cannon and Jacksonville's Chip Kelly to see who might win this year's award.

"I felt that the Pikemen deserved my best as they were willing to pay a premium for my services," said Cannon. "I have always given my best, but over the past three years I feel that perhaps I have learned more about the art of pitching and thus have become a better major league pitcher as a result."

Cannon's numbers since the beginning of the 2038 season are eye-popping. A 45-17 record. A 2.59 ERA - over the past two and a half years! A near impossible K/BB ratio of 511/104, almost 5-1 strikeouts to walks. In short, the lefty has been nothing short of magnificent over that time span.

"Dan's a serious guy, and he's a serious pitcher," said fellow ace starter Dave Martin. "I'm just glad he's on our side and not against us."

The Pikemen rely heavily on the productivity of their top three starters, and Cannon has been insanely good since being paid last year, getting a backloaded six year deal which seemed like an obvious cap casualty at the time. Now? It's hard to say.

"Is a guy like Dan worth $30 million a year? He is to me," said Rockville pitching coach Arturo Trujillo. "You couldn't ask for a better pitcher than him, and he's on time, does his thing, and makes everyone around him better with his amazingness."

Cannon has been incredible, but worth pointing out that according to Statsplus historical leaderboards, the 8.36 WAR he put up is only 9th best since 2020.

Nelson Ramirez 9.85 SA (2029)
Ken Walter 9.59 SEA (2036)
Gabriel Campos 9.19 CAL (2020)
Billy Chapel Jr. 9.12 CAR (2029)
Manuel Ramirez 8.79 NO (2023)
Mike Swanson 8.78 BUF (2021)
Feliciano Rafael 8.58 SFV (2038)
Billy Chapel Jr. 8.49 CAR (2024)
Dan Cannon 8.36 RCK (2039)

EDIT: for you new guys, CAR is Carolina which is the former Rockville home and BUF is Buffalo (former home of San Fernando).
