I’m gonna shake up my format a little bit to mimic what Ron’s been up to with his “Prospect Watch” series. I still want to assign letter grades but listing some ratings on the screen and limiting myself to a top 5 should make it more readable.
Here is a link to the last time I analyzed my corner infield prospects. All the players listed below were mentioned then in roughly the same order.
#1
José Mendoza (B-) | Age: 20 | AAA
OVR/POT | CON | BABIP | AVK | GAP | POW | EYE |
40/45 | 7/7 | 6/6 | 8/8 | 5/5 | 5/5 | 5/5 |
Former 2060 13th overall pick Mendoza has moved quickly thru our system and recently got promoted to AAA where he’s sustained his AA production by slashing .329/.364/.479. He’s an underrated 45 POT in this author’s opinion. He’s got a solid offensive game highlighted by an above average hit tool that should allow him to hit .280+ in the majors with a little pop. We’d love to see his arm bump another point as 8 is usually my threshold at the hot corner, although with each passing season I care less about my third base defense. Mendoza’s fully developed but likely won’t see the BBA until 2063 so he can accumulate some PAs in Brooks.
#2
Awdia Iman (C) | Age: 23 | AAA
OVR/POT | CON | BABIP | AVK | GAP | POW | EYE |
35/45 | 5/6 | 5/6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 4/4 |
Iman has been a project for us since we took the switch-hitter out of high school in the 2057 draft but he’s almost fully developed now. He’s just kind of average across the board except for below average patience at the plate. He had a 7 contact potential rating for a stretch earlier this year so maybe if he fully develops his BABIP rating he can get back up there. Disappointing results in Brooks lead us to demote Iman to AA for the upcoming sim but he was good in AA where he raised his OPS by 100 points from last season. I expect him to be in the mix for a bench role by the end of 2063.
#3
Justin Rainer (C-) | Age: 20 | SA
OVR/POT | CON | BABIP | AVK | GAP | POW | EYE |
20/45 | 6/6 | 3/6 | 4/6 | 4/5 | 6/6 | 4/4 |
Rainer’s scouting report is very similar to Iman on paper. He’s not a switch-hitter and he’s a little sloppier in the field but he’s also 20 years old with a fair bit of development left. Rainer hasn’t produced a positive WAR rating as a pro so he could free fall on the next list if the tools don’t start to translate. A little development could get him to A ball next season even if he doesn't have the production.
#4
Abdul-Mujib bin Raghib (C-) | Age: 19 | R
OVR/POT | CON | BABIP | AVK | GAP | POW | EYE |
20/45 | 2/6 | 3/9 | 2/4 | 3/5 | 3/6 | 3/8 |
Raghib just moved over from the complex so he doesn’t have much of a track record. I can’t help but salivate at the OBP a 9 BAIP, 8 EYE hitter could maintain. It’s a misnomer to list him here as a third baseman—his defensive tools are more that of a first baseman now. We’d need at least another point of arm bumpage before we consider playing him at third, Lane style.
#5
Jesús Reyes (C-) | Age: 22 | A
OVR/POT | CON | BABIP | AVK | GAP | POW | EYE |
30/40 | 5/7 | 4/6 | 8/8 | 6/6 | 3/3 | 4/4 |
Another project from the 2057 draft, Reyes hasn’t developed as successfully as Iman. I’m not sure it’s going to happen for the lefty but he’ll hang on this list one more time. Reyes is hitting.266/.328/.352 at A ball and with his lack of power or plate discipline he needs to be hitting .300+ to have a BBA future. Any sort of slip in his ratings could lead to Reyes getting cut next spring.
