2062.07: Rummaging Bears - Relief Pitchers

How well are our spring campers' picnic baskets secured?

Sure-Fire Locks
RP Bryan Longstaff, RP Dhrtatman Seshadri, RP Bob Butler

The SFB closer will once again be Bryan Longstaff who saved 42 games in 2061. Now 38 years old, Longstaff experienced diminished peripherals but threw a career high 82 innings. He’ll have two featured setup men, Sesahdri and Butler. Seshadri came over from Chicago midseason and had a 2.98 ERA in San Fernando. Butler once again underperformed his FIP but surely his performance will catch up with his ratings at some point. The two compliment each other well since they throw with opposite hands and have some platoon splits.

Near Locks
RP Myung-joo Pak, RP Steve Fuller

Pak was the recipient of a reliever conversion and now features just two pitches, a 9 rated fastball that reaches up to 100 mph and a 6 rated splitter. With the PPT sunk into his conversion the Bears are surely hoping he can help bridge leads from their starting pitchers to the three guys listed above. Fuller is a workaday lefty with unimpressive overall ratings, but his 8 rated changeup helped him post a 3.10 career FIP so far in San Fernando.

Trying to Break-In
RP Orhan Atil, RP Ben Weaver, RP Duane Bishop, SP Robert Wilson

Most of these guys will make the team out of camp but unlike those listed above they can all head to the minors without hitting waivers. Atil is a late blooming southpaw who made his BBA debut last September. He still has all of his options remaining. Weaver has been with the org for several seasons since being taken in the Rule 5 draft and might join the bullpen thanks to his impressive movement rating and the team’s recent penny pinching ways. Bishop is another guy who’s game is built on a high movement rating, although he’s still 23. Wilson should have been listed in the starting pitching post since he’s probably ahead of any of the other veteran starting pitching depth brought into camp on a split contract. Wilson was with the Bears on the same arrangement last spring before opting out. He later joined the Rocky Mountain Oysters and made 23 starts for them.

Breaking in the Back Door
RP Ghi-cheng Yu, RP Jose Diaz, RP Dale McCutcheon

Yu is a veteran starting pitcher who has spent most of his career in AAA, although he did throw 134 innings for Calgary in 2056. He’s a little lacking in stuff but we ponder whether he might make a strong relief conversion next offseason if we can retain him. He’s got five pitches highlighted by a 6 rated fastball and a 7 rated knucklecurve. He’s pitched well this spring but otherwise his recent track record is spotty. Diaz and McCutcheon are prospects likely ticketed for AA as they master their control and secondary offerings. Both throw left handed.
