2061.02: Bears Lose Seven in Rule 5 Draft
1/1/2061
San Fernando managed to keep two open spots on our 40-man roster and with no free agent targets in sight there's a pretty good chance our selections will stick. We added a few players to our 40-man a few sims in advance to protect them in the draft and after trading two draft eligible prospects to Phoenix (relief pitcher Manuel Parra and catcher Dorian Zoïtakis) we didn't really have any players left we would be heartbroken if selected. Yet somehow we still had seven players selected from our organization. Other teams were enamored with our mid-30s AAA pitching depth it seems. Below are the nine picks in which the San Fernando Bears were involved.
Omaha Cyclones: Drafted RP Felipe Méndez in the 2060 Rule 5 Draft (Round 1, Pick 9, 9th overall Pick) from the San Fernando Bears.
I coulda sworn Mendez was eligible for free agency but somehow he was still on my AAA roster after free agents declared. We considered stashing the 34 year-old but looking at the back of his baseball card it donned on us he hasn't really been a good pitcher since about 2053, even if the game lists him as a 55 OVR.
San Fernando Bears: Drafted SP Michael Sullivan in the 2060 Rule 5 Draft (Round 1, Pick 19, 19th overall Pick) from the Nashville Bluebirds.
Sullivan is old but his ratings reflect him as a starting pitcher. As a reliever, the veteran lefty goes 5-6-7 in his ratings which is good enough to make a BBA team as a southpaw. He was pretty darned good with Mexico City nearly a decade ago but has been mired in AAA ever since. Plus, this was an opportunity to nab depth away from Nashville.
New Orleans Crawdads: Drafted SS John McLeod in the 2060 Rule 5 Draft (Round 1, Pick 20, 20th overall Pick) from the San Fernando Bears.
We considered McLeod a legit prospect for a couple years after we drafted him but he was eventually relegated into the category of organizational filler. He hit .375 last season in AA as a 25 year-old and continued to hit in AAA, but we just don't expect him to be more than mediocre at the big league level and our 40-man is already stuffed with higher ceiling shortstop prospects. This could be a good get for New Orleans but they should note McLeod will not be popular in the clubhouse.
San Fernando Bears: Drafted LF Rafael Marquis in the 2060 Rule 5 Draft (Round 2, Pick 19, 51st overall Pick) from the New Orleans Crawdads.
Now we get to exact revenge on New Orleans by drafting their young outfielder. The 24 year-old lefty hitting Marquis still has some development left but he's been in AAA for three years and slashed .337/.429/.580. We like his wide platoon splits and ability to play defense across the outfield.
Charlotte Flyers: Drafted SP César Macías in the 2060 Rule 5 Draft (Round 2, Pick 24, 56th overall Pick) from the San Fernando Bears.
Macias was effective for AAA Brooks in 2060 but to be honest was never given serious consideration for a promotion to the Brewster. The 34 year-olds recent results have been a mixed bag but he should keep the ball on the ground for Charlotte.
Brooklyn Robins: Drafted SP Francisco Molina in the 2060 Rule 5 Draft (Round 3, Pick 10, 74th overall Pick) from the San Fernando Bears.
Another pitcher closer to being middle-aged than in his physical prime. Molina struggled in Brooks and spent part of 2060 in DFA.
Chicago Black Sox: Drafted RP Eddie Armstrong in the 2060 Rule 5 Draft (Round 3, Pick 11, 75th overall Pick) from the San Fernando Bears.
We were excited about Armstrong as starting pitching depth before the 2060 season and expected him to nab a few starts. But he's 36 and lumped a bit since last offseason.
Calgary Pioneers: Drafted RP Mufid Kedar in the 2060 Rule 5 Draft (Round 5, Pick 29, 157th overall Pick) from the San Fernando Bears.
Kedar spent less than a day in the San Fernando organization, having both signed a minor league deal and then being rule 5 drafted on 12/16/60. We hardly knew ye.
Calgary Pioneers: Drafted SP António García in the 2060 Rule 5 Draft (Round 6, Pick 29, 189th overall Pick) from the San Fernando Bears.
Garcia was by far the youngest player drafted from us at just 23. We knew his plus fastball and curve would draw some attention but at the end of the day he won't be able to keep the ball in the park in San Fernando. Calgary drafted a bunch of pitchers so I expect some to be returned. They could consider a relief conversion as well.

Especially righties. You could just sign a free agent to a minor league deal.

Yeah, I don't use r5 that way. But should probably consider it for things like long man in the pen
Cheaper than free agent.

Was really interesting to read this at roughly mid season and see what happened.

Re: 2061.02: Bears Lose Seven in Rule 5 Draft
Looks like I fucked up trading Parra. He was bumping like crazy but still looked HR vulnerable (and he’s RH) so I didn’t want to use a 40 man spot on him.
Mendez is having a career year at 34.
Not sure why New Orleans is still playing McLeod. He even adds those shitty intangibles to the mix.
Despite some lumps so far so good with Marquis.
I swear I make a lot of mistakes and let some good players leave my org on the margins.
