2060.04: Rummaging Bears - Starting Pitchers

How well are our campers' picnic baskets secured?

Sure-Fire Locks
SP Ielemia Faletose, SP John Dawson, SP Morgan Tomsett

I overspent on Ielemia Faletose after the starting pitching market dried up and I scrambled. He's been really good in the GBC and I've tailored my defense for him. Dawson was what was left. The 9 stuff lefty still has the potential for excellence. Tomsett has replaced Swanson as the San Fernando representative for exactly what you want out of a mid-rotation starter.

Near Locks
SP Rick Marriott

Marriott is only at this tier because he has options. His ERA pitching in front of a sometimes frightful infield defense was over 5.00 but the 4.28 FIP should be more indicative of what's to come for the 22 year-old.

Trying to Break-In
SP Alexander Swanson, SP Ben Weaver

Swanson failed to pitch like his old self after returning from a long injury. Maybe he can get stronger and return closer to career averages. Weaver was more of a lock until spending time in the development lab on his secondary pitches (duh!) his stamina was reduced from 4 to 3. That's a really important drop off point for a starting pitcher and now I'm eyeballing his options to see if he can't regain it in AAA.

Breaking in the Back Door
SP Eddie Armstrong, SP Felipe Mendez, SP Jason Drew, SP Richard Bullock

I did try to lock up a few former successful BBAers on minor league deals in case my fifth starters go south, injury, etc. I think I'll need Bullock as a lefty in the bullpen who can eat innings. He's just sort of blah as a starter.

I think I mentioned this elsewhere but the free agent options this Spring were a lot less palatable than in past years which means I may strategize differently going forward.

I agree on that point on the position player and relief pitcher side. It was actually a really deep and strong class for SP. It's going to be unpredictable going forward.

You have some nice depth for starters going on there.

Much better depth than I. Not sure if Dawson is best served as a starter or a stopper.

He put up as much WAR per season in CCJ as a reliever as he did as a starter in NAS so probably as stopper. I made sure not to promise him a role.

True. That 4 stamina might be ok to start but the pitches and ratings would make him a really good stopper.

The stopper role was why I traded for him. Didn't really work out as well as I'd hoped, but it was a small sample.
