2057.03: Bears' Cubs - RP Prospects

In this edition of the 2057 Bears’ Cubs series I’ll focus on players who spent the majority of their time as a relief pitcher during the 2056 season.

The best relief pitching prospects in the San Fernando organization are unsurprisingly from its highest levels. This is because I don’t prioritize relievers in the draft so a decent relief pitching prospect has to first fail as a starting pitcher in the lower levels.

C
C- Morgan Tomsett
C- Joe Hulton

D
D+ Luis Peña
D Jeff Wills

Honorable Mention
Lowell Cook

Morgan Tomsett headlines the reliever prospects by bumping from 8-5-7 to 9-7-9 base pitching potential ratings over the course of a calendar year. He dominated with a 1.60 ERA in his third go-round in AA before getting a late season bump up to AAA. The knucklecurve he added over the offseason as his third pitch even gives him an outside chance of getting some starts. The 25 year-old who was signed as an undrafted free agent could make his major league debut this season after being added to the 40-man roster over the offseason.

Joe Hulton emerged from the same draft class as Tomsett, although he entered the league directly from high school and is thus still just 21 years old. Originally drafted as a starting pitcher in the 3rd round, Hulton is certainly a relief pitcher these days. He’s had some strong seasons but is most likely 40-man depth for now.

Record of how Luis Pena joined the Bears organization doesn’t appear in his player history on statsplus, although my memory has us claiming him off waivers late in the 2055 campaign. The southpaw is still just 25 years old and his 10-7-6 ratings already afforded him some big league success in San Fernando. Since he’s out of options Pena will look to secure one of the last spots in the team’s 2057 bullpen.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t include a pet player, Jeff Wills. I’ve come very close to using a reliever conversion on Wills. I love his movement rating and he was a 2nd round pick in my first draft. I’ve finally given up hope that he’ll develop enough stuff to draw any BBA starts.

My lone honorable mention for this position is Lowell Cook. I picked him up in a trade with Long Beach back in 2054. He was having some success as a starter at the time but his 4 control potential spells bullpen.
