57.5- A Light Bulb Analogy

Post by chicoruiz » Fri Nov 10, 2023 1:04 pm

Am I the king of analogies lately, or what???

Anyway, this is not an original one. I’ve heard it said (by Bill James, maybe?) that investing in cheap ball players is like buying cheap generic light bulbs. Sure they’re half the price… but what if they only last half as long, and then you figure in the extra trips to the store, and the time you spend going around changing light bulbs twice as often?

I’ve been in “cheap bulb” mode with my pitching staff for a while now, and I had determined that this off-season I was going to get a few guys I could count on for multiple years. Unfortunately, several of the arms I had targeted have signed elsewhere, including a couple to teams in my own division. So, with only two spots in my rotation currently occupied, I’m facing the possibility of falling back again onto short-term fixes.

Enter Scott Bugbie…

No one would ever say he’s a guy you can plug into a rotation and feel good about. He’s considered a bit fragile, and his best years have been as a reliever. But he’s an actual pitcher who’s willing to sign with us, and so far he’s the only one, so I’ve decided I love him. His last good season as a starter was all the way back in 2048, and he’s mostly been a AAA guy since, but looking at how scouts perceive him, I see no reason why he couldn’t be a starter. Of course, I said that last year about Ortiz, and the result was just plain tragic. At the very least though, Scott should be a competent lefty out of the pen.

Which would still leave me with three rotation spots open. Time to get back to work and find me a couple of those better quality light bulbs…

Always loved Bugbie. I was saddened that he didn't live up to his potential, but he's still a useful piece. Never pulled the trigger on a RP conversion because I liked his flexibility. Great option as a spot starter or opener, especially with his reverse splits.

I had hopes for Bugbie.

Alas, I'm not the brightest bulb in the pack.

Bugbie reminds me of this one trade I made, once upon a time, and it didn’t turn out well for me.

I think it turned out alright for you. 3 consecutive Montys not enough for you?

I mean, it didn't end up "hurting" but it "hurt"
