2061-4 Serrano the.. Shortstop?

Post by Knucklehead254 » Wed Oct 16, 2024 2:14 pm

"Come on in Serrano!" I say as I motion him in.

Reynaldo Serrano enters without haste, wondering what I'll have to say to him today. You see I sort of got an idea from another GM in the league who asked me a question. "Why don't you have Serrano try Shortstop?"

Of course that idea has never crossed my mind before. At this moment in time he's had practically no experience in the role, and with his recent diamond glove win at second base, surely it wouldn't make any sense to switch him over now. I don't think that's what I would do anyways, but thinking about it, it wouldn't hurt to give him a try.

"What can I do for you sir?"

"Well I've been thinking about where were gonna be at this season, I think we could really push for a playoff spot this year."

"I agree."

"So with that being said I want to talk about something I want to try this spring training."

At this point I had already sent him to our dev lab to work on his durability again, trying to keep him healthy is priority #1 in my eyes.

"I know you haven't had much experience in the position, but we're gonna play you at shortstop."

"Wait seriously.. I've never really played there before, not sure if I've got the arm strength."

"Don't worry about it, that's why were just going to do a test run for the spring. For all intensive purposes you will be back at second base for the regular season, but I don't think it would hurt to have more experience at short. I think you have the tools for it."

"I suppose that makes sense.."

He seemed uneasy about it, understandable for a guy that rarely plays one of the most demanding positions in all of baseball. But sometimes when you want to contend you have to try crazy things. Even if that means pushing your franchise guy into uncomfortable situations.

Ha, we'll see what happens and what his SS rating could be. But I don't think it'll happen this regular season. Gotta defend that diamond glove crown (sorry @Lane)

His glove should be solid there, but not slam dunk Zimmer. But a good bat in the position can be worth a lot, relative.

I'm kinda in the same boat with Randall Gray. I'm very anti having a 7 rated SS. But with the SS position so shallow right now, he doesn't look too bad there. I gave him a long look last season when our fate was sealed and he had a solid 1.4 zr in 40 games. It really boosted his WAR and made him look like a super star. But in the end I'm more into team success than individual and went back to our no hit, 10 defense SS in playoffs.

Baseball is a game of individual successes IMO.
