Recently, the list of international free agents was released. Teams around the league are scrambling to set up meetings with these youngsters in hopes to overpay for their services. Of course, many of these players will likely not pan out. The biggest signing of the 2041 IFA pool was Alberto Romero. He signed with the Yellow Springs Nine for $26 million, with penalties that amount is $51 million. Not a great investment for the team, but they probably recouped the money in like half a season so they're fine. This is just one example of teams overpaying for these youngsters who eventually don't pan out.
Regardless, the Mounties are reportedly one of the many teams salivating at the thought of throwing tens of millions of dollars at 16 year old baseball players in the hopes they reach their potential by the end of the decade. When you put it like that, it is actually not a good business plan, but that's just baseball. If the Mounties did sign one of the top international free agents, it would be the first time they splashed the cash on an IFA player since GM Taylor Bettencourt took over. The only IFA player that this GM has signed is Oong-cheon Park. The team signed him in 2041 for $800,000. So, if the team signed someone this time around, this would be the first time Bettencourt has paid over 7 figures for an IFA player. We will find out sometime soon whether the team strikes out or sets up a 16 year old for the rest of his life.
