In what should be known as a world class jinx whenever I post my 'Meet The Starters', I shockingly decided to deal away Amphibian Johnson after less than a full season to the Boise Spuds for CF Bob Hills and prospects LF Manny Fernandez and SP Patrick Klerk. You may think I'm crazy for dealing away an 11 rated Center fielder especially considering how I value defense. The first reason is Hector Ruiz. He's been developing well and looks ready to be a full time starter in AAA and will even be the starting center fielder for spring training. I have no doubts he'll be a starter next season The second reason is money. The deal gives me more flexibility for next season since Hills will be in arbitration and it frees up $5 million right away. The final reason is injury proneness. Johnson is Fragile (though to be fair he hasn't suffered a major injury in three seasons), Hills is an Ironman. The two prospects have promise and Fernandez could very well be a mainstay in the coming years depending on what happens
Bob Hills should do fine in CF for this season and can hopefully get on base with his very good eye which is something our team as a whole struggled with last season. Speaking of which meet the newest Mountie we signed, Colby Triska. Triska's ability to draw walks and fast speed on the basepaths makes him the perfect candidate to be our leadoff hitter this season. The question is in what position. He hasn't exactly lit the world on fire as a second basemen with just 7 range and 3 arm. Could this mean we see Sam Corkum get relegated to backup at first base? Or does Royce Hinkle finally have enough defensive prowess to move out into left field, freeing up the DH spot. There is a lot of options for me this season but I fully expect Triska to be a very contributing member of the Vancouver Mounties (also he's an Ironman as well and ex-Bluebird).
Oh I also sold C Luis Gonzales for $2,000,000 after a bidding war between two teams. I didn't want to lose him but I realized Marcos Cordova will be out of minor league options and I didn't want to carry three catchers on the active roster.
