Pitcher Todd Jones was put on the waiver wire to make room for the promotion of reliever Juan Evans now that the roster expansions are occurring. Although the season is in the roster expansion portion of the season, Valencia was maxed out on its 40-man secondary roster.
Todd Jones was signed to a free agent deal this past off-season to a one year/$2.8M package in the hopes that he could fill one of the open pitching spots in the rotation during the rebuild. Todd responded by going 4-9 with a 7.30 ERA and a 1.80 WHIP. After the first two months of the season Todd was moved to the bullpen. The 37 year old produced a 0.5 WAR on the season compared to his 1.0 and 2.4 WAR in his previous two seasons.
In his place will now be rising prospect Juan Evans. The 2063 has shown Evan's being selected s the fourth overall pick in this year's draft and proceeding to have strong performances at the A and AA evel. In his 15 games at AAA, Juan did not allow an earned run in his first 14 appearances collecting 9 saves along the way. Juan's miniscule ERA of 0.59 and WHIP of 1.11 has Valencia fans hoping he will be the perfect bookend to rookie closer Dave Furman.
