The Valencia Stars made its third pick in the rookie draft by selecting 18 year-old Gerardo Vega. The left fielder was the 82nd overall pick of the draft. Gerardo was ranked 13th on the draft board among all outfielders in the draft. While is current rating among scouts is 25, the scouts are projecting Vega to have a potential overall rating of 50.
Vega joins the ranks of other outfielders in the Valencia farm system who were drafted in the top 5 rounds over the last two years. That list includes first-rounders Bill Nesbitt and Santiago Dieguez along with Ed Bush, Tomas Rodriguez and Miguel Gonzales.
Gerardo hit .381 with a .495 on-base percentage while also hitting 15 homers in college last season. His Contact/Power/Eye ratings of 7/6/5 should allow him to get on base often enough to put him in the upper half of the lineup. On defense, Gerardo has a slightly above average glove.
