Galaxy Gas 2060.22 – Memory Lane

Post by DugoutDesperado » Thu Aug 08, 2024 7:32 am

Flashback to May of 2045, a 22 year old from Plymouth, Indiana receives a call from fellow Hoosier and Jacksonville GM, Gregg Greathouse, to say that Peter Dean was the third overall pick in the draft. Dean worked his way through A-ball, AA and then AAA all within one year posting 2.14, 1.37 and 1.77 ERA’s along the way.

Jus a short 11 months after he was drafted, Dean was pitching in Valencia where he went on to win 89 games over the next 9 seasons. In his first season he went 11-9 with a 3.46 ERA and was voted the Joe Gillstrom Newcomer of the Year. Fast forward six years to Dean at 37 and in the twilight of his career Dean was sitting in his home back in Plymouth when he heard that distantly familiar voice on the phone once again. This time it was Greathouse asking Pete to join him in a reunion tour of sorts but this time it would be in Valencia. Pete signed a one-year/$1.4M contract to fill a void for a year until the Stars could get their finances in order enough to pursue longer term options. Dean was pondering if his baseball days were behind him since it was getting late in the free agency period/off-season.

In his second start of the season, Dean was pitching in front of his home crowd of 45,289 fans with the Sacramento Mad Popes coming into town. After giving up a run on three hits in the first inning, he only allowed three more batters to reach base over the next 6 plus innings to notch his first win in a Valencia uniform as the Stars went on to win by a score of 4-1.

“I felt like a kid all over again,” Dean stated when asked how it felt to pitch after getting a new lease on life when he thought his career may have been done.

Love this guys story. Nice career in Jacksonville and gets relegated to Gotham before moving on and jumping between minors and majors for other teams only to end up with the GM that drafted him. So awesome!
