In his first outing with the rookie club in Russelville, first round draft pick SP Ernesto Escalante left after warming up in the third inning.
Ernesto was ceremoniously welcomed to the minors with a solo homer over the right field fence. It was a monstrous 468-foot shot that cleared the street just past the VIP parking lot.
“You would have thought Crash Davis was behind the plate when you saw that one leave the yard,” pitching coach Elmar Baas said.
After the initial blast, Ernesto sat down the next six batters he faced including two strikeouts.
After the game and medical evaluation the diagnosis came back as a partially torn labrum. He is expected to miss 8 weeks.
“We knew we were rolling the dice when we saw his injury proneness, but we felt it was worth it looking at his ratings,” the Valencia GM stated in the press release. “Unfortunately, this time it came up snake eyes.”
