VALENCIA – The Valencia Stars began the month of May just two games out of first place in the Pacific Division, but a crushing 9-20 record had them finish the month in last place. A 7-16 June record has kept them there.
Emblematic of this rough patch of baseball was the Popes' road sweep of the Stars in which they outscored a listless home squad 35-11, improving their mark against the Stars on the season to 8-0. This Stars team is just plain bad, in other words, and at times unwatchable.
Preseason predictions coming into 2055 had the Stars winning somewhere in the neighborhood of 79-83 games, a modest improvement on a disappointing 74-win 2054, but the team didn't look quite good enough to get back to the postseason. It also didn't look nearly this bad.
Now, there is a long list of statistical categories in which the Stars rank at or near the bottom of the Frick. In areas where they have lately excelled, they are now just okay (see team defensive efficiency). In areas where they were at least good enough, they are now simply awful (see team pretty much everything else).
In what has been a galling move for many fans, the team has both raised tickets prices in 2055 and refused to spend money. For whatever reason, the club remains more than $13M below the salary cap threshold. Valencia's modest free agent acquisitions have not, for the most part, panned out (though Ulvi Basgil remains a notable bright spot). What's the team's plan going forward? That's anyone's guess.
