Galaxy Gas 2060.52 - Pitching Gamble

Prior to the 2060 season, the Valencia front office decided to let starting pitcher Adam Hines go to free agency instead of signing him to a 6 year / $12.6M dollar per year deal as the Stars were trying to get right-side up on their financial situation. Hines ended up signing a 6 year deal with the Chicago Black Sox at $20M per year.

As a replacement, the Stars picked up Peter Dean at $1.4M which many would consider a huge gamble. As 2060 draws to a close with the playoffs rounding out the season, the Gas staff decided to compare the 2060 numbers for the two pitchers. The summary is that the Stars mat have come out ahead on paper when you o the comparison, but one wonders if the difference between the late season injuries/fall-off for Dean and what Hines produced (3-1 record with a 2.86 ERA in September) would have made enough of a difference to get the Stars in the playoffs who missed the last spot by 3 games.

The overall comparison for 2060 had Hines with a 2.5 WAR at $21.4M (counting bonus) while Dean had a WAR of 2.1 on his $1.4M/1 year deal.

However, Hines most likely has a lot more gas left in the tank at 27 years old while Dean is playing Russian Roulette with being virtually non-existent at 37.

All regular season games count the same and the fact of the matter is you nearly replicated Hines’ results for a fraction of the cost. Now you’ve gotta do it again but Hineslooks more MOR than TOR starter.
