In a move that had some people scratching their heads, the Valencia front office broke out the checkbook for the second time in a week by signing an extension with starting pitcher Reynold Voermans to a $1.7M/one-year deal.
The 37 year old southpaw was slated in the #4 position of the rotation for the entire season. Reynold did end up being a 10-game winner with a record of 10-14 and an ERA of 4.39 while logging a respectable 188 innings over 32 starts. Those are respectable numbers for a person in the #4 slot for a team that is trying to find a way into the post season that has narrowly escaped the Stars’ grasp over the last two years. The concern is that Reynold tailed off a little bit in September. Was that due to the miles being racked up on that 37 year-old arm that is finally catching up to him or was it due to Miller Shed being absent from second base during the month of September (or both)?
When the front office was asked for comment, the main gist of the story was that the money will still be too tight to get another quality arm via the free agent market and there are not any candidates jumping out in the AAA farm team in Mars, so this was the best route to go for 2060. If Reynold can duplicate is 2059 season that resulted in a 2.5 WAR or something close to it, then this extension will be well worth the money, but at 37, that could be a big if.
The Aruban native stated, “My arm still feels like it has another year or two in it so I am glad that Valencia is giving another shot.”
